I Got Hit in the Face During Volleyball. During a Serve.

Well, I suck at sports. That’s the first thing you need to know about this story.

Not your regular sucking at sports.. but.. like.. I’m extra sucky.

In 4th grade I played basketball. I remember missing the basket every time during practice and having to rebound my own shots that ended up in other people’s courts and even the KIDS wondering how someone could be so bad. My stomach ended up in knots. I also tried soccer, gymnastics, dance, and tennis.

Tennis was awful. I was in like 9th grade and my mom made me take lessons. Well, everyone else took lessons at an appropriate age and the girl teaching the lessons was my age and the other kids were all 7. I quit after one lesson. I usually try to stick with things I’ve started but that was too much.

I also did track for 2 years in high school. I was the slowest one on the team. That is not an exaggeration. I would be halfway through the workout and girls would be on their way back or already done. My actual event was long jump and, I kid you not, I scratched at EVERY single meet that I participated in for the first year.

I decided to give sports one last try in college. I was on an intramural kickball team. My wimpy band of freshmen lost against senior football players in like 15 minutes. After that, I decided I was perfectly content cheering from the sidelines.

That was quite a long intro to what will be a shorter story. However, before continuing, you need to understand how much I HATE playing sports because of how much I SUCK at them. Did I provide enough examples? I have more…

So, now, fast forward to present time. It has been 6 years since I have played an organized sport. But, I remain an optimist. When Matt’s aunt asked me to play on her sand volleyball team for a one day tournament I figured it could be fun. You see, those 6 years stifled the pain of always being last, always missing the ball, and always looking like a dumbass.

So, Saturday rolled around. I spent all of Friday night and all of Saturday morning being nervous. I text my mom asking for her to be my mommy again and tell me I could do it. She told me to suck it up, try my best, and look forward to the beer at the end. That I could do.

Well, the game started, I hit it over a few times.. everything was okay. Then this huge athletic dude in a blue cut-off started serving for the other team. I was in the back center.

Time out: before the story continues, I need to tell you that I can’t set. I only know how to bump the volleyball. Thanks, Mrs. Taft for teaching me that one skill in your 5th grade volleyball day camp.

Ok, resume: So, he served and it was heading straight towards me. I didn’t really know how to back up enough and get under it to bump it. I needed to set it, but it was flying towards me, and I panicked. Well, too bad for me because it ended up smashing me in the face.

Mortifying.

To make matters worse, he obviously got to serve it again and he did the same thing and I did the same thing and I got hit in the mother fucking face AGAIN.

Yes it left a bruise.

I also tried to hit the ball at various other times during the game and air balled at least 3 times, and when I served I missed getting it over (or even still on the court) all but once.

I’m not making it up. I did play better the next game, thank GOD.

You better believe that after game beer was the best damn beer I’ve ever had.

P.S. I’m going back for more tonight – one of Matt’s friends signed me up to be on his volleyball team that plays EVERY Thursday night. At least in this league drinking during the game is much encouraged. I guess I’m going to have to get good quick.

Or buy some heavy duty bruise covering foundation.

Wish me luck!

Itinerary

Right before departure

So my little brother is a badass. He just finished up his junior year of college. While balancing classes, he worked full time as a server and saved ALL of his money to go on a self-funded backpacking trip through Europe for 10 weeks!!! Yes. TEN weeks! How jealous are we?

So, he left May 23rd and will be gone until August. I am living vicariously through him. I did get to study abroad in college (East Asia represent!) but I have not gotten to go abroad in 2 years! The last place I went was Mexico and that barely even counts! Ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Luckily I’m going to Memphis and Florida this summer, so hopefully that will cure some of my itch to travel, but.. after looking at his itinerary again, I’m thinking I need to cross the ocean soon. Who’s with me??

Anyways, the craziest thing is that what he’s wearing and that tiny little bag are ALL THAT HE’S TAKING! What the what? Yeah. Talk about minimalist packing. I just can’t do that.

I miss you Coops! I know you’re having a blast. Don’t forget the rule we had about not getting kidnapped! Seriously, though.

Outfit of the Day #27

image-13 Please excuse my wet hair. I wanted to make sure I got these outfit pics before I forgot (I always forget!). The top is Old Navy, the shorts and sandals are American Eagle.

This was just a lazy summer day outfit. I’ve been wearing workout/comfy clothes pretty much nonstop sooo I decided to put on an actual outfit one day. I bought the top last summer but this was the first time I’ve worn it. I think I will probably take it on vacation and wear it as a cover-up. It’s so floaty.. I think it needs some beach exposure!

What do you think? Does your summer wardrobe consist of lazy clothes, too? Or do you make the effort to look cute everyday?

Outfit of the Day #26

image-7I didn’t take any “outfit” pics.. so this will have to do. I wore this dress to Matt’s sister’s graduation party. I LOVE THIS DRESS! It’s SO comfy, was super cheap, and is perfect for summer! I got it at JCPenney’s. The sandals are from Target as is the belt.

What do you think? I love it so just tell me you do, too!

P.S. How hot is my boyfriend? #luckygirl

Outfit of the Day #25

image-3Casual Friday! I actually have no idea when/where/why I wore this outfit.. It was just for a random day. But, you can’t go wrong with jean shorts & a black top! I like the pop of blue on my nails, too. Just ignore my crazy hair. I’m trying to make bed-head work for me.. I don’t think I hit it in this pic, though. Oops!

What do you think of my super-casual Friday outfit?

Grad Gift

image-12Matt’s little sister graduated high school this year. She’s making the big move to Mizzou on August 11th, so I wanted to make sure she was prepared!

For her grad gift, I put together a bag full of college necessities. I’m for sure not original in this gift idea but it was fun nonetheless. I got a similar gift when I graduated high school and it was very appreciated since it had a few supplies I might have forgotten otherwise.

The bag is a thirty-one bag that I ordered. It was on the pricey side, but I think it’s worth it since it was a gift from Matt, me, and his daughter – plus it was for Matt’s sister. Plus, she’s the first one in his family to really go away to school! It’s a huge deal and we are all so proud of her. So, all that justified the cost of the bag. I would say it was around $50 for the bag, the college logo, and the embroidery.

Inside I stuffed it with: her favorite snacks, school supplies (neon sharpies, thumbs up sticky notes, a chevron notepad, rainbow pencils, plain black pens, a hand-held pencil sharpener), safety pins (for outfit adjustment. You girls know what I mean), Mizzou college girl necessities (black and gold ribbon, black and gold nail polish), black and gold cups, napkins, paper plates, and cutlery, and 2 mugs.

I forgot to take a picture of the finished mugs, but I wrote on one of them “GO MIZZOU!” and on the other “Matt’s daughter’s name <3s tt” TT is Matt’s sister’s nickname.. Then I outlined Little Miss’s hand and drew a heart inside it. I baked the mugs at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes because Pinterest told me that would set the permanent marker. I don’t think it did, but.. oh well. She can keep pens in them or wash them gently I suppose.

I was pretty stoked with how the gift turned out!

What was the best grad gift you’ve received or given? Leave me a comment to let me know!

Outfit of the Day #24

image-11I wore this outfit to church and the fancy hotel that my dad is the chef at (I know I’m bragging, but his job is just so cool!) on Mother’s Day. There was a gorgeous brunch banquet and this is what I wore. I drank a lot of mimosas and chit chatted with my mom! It was such a great Mother’s Day.

I just want to point out that this dress is from Wal-Mart! I have now worn it: to work (and here in blue), to a wedding, on Mother’s Day, and probably a few other places, too. It is so versatile and very well made. Plus it was super cheap. My mom gave it to me as a gift and I’m not kidding until she told me where it came from, I was seriously thinking Calvin Klein or Macy’s. But, nope! Wal-Mart for the win!

Happy Summer Tuesday!

Here’s what I’ve been up to on my summer vacation so far:

watching Little Miss kick some booty in soccer while sitting on my tie-dye blanket in the grass :)

Outfit of the Day #23

image-10This was one of my last work outfits before school let out for summer! I am OBSESSED with those jersey skirts from Old Navy. I have 3! I paired this brown one with a simple white top and gold accessories.

It was breezy and super comfy for my year round 85+ degree classroom. Not kidding about the temp.

What do you think?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPENCIE!!!

My baby brother (8.5) years younger!!! turned FIFTEEN today! It’s so cool to watch this kid grow up – I remember the day he was born vividly. I stayed at Jessica Geiger’s house while my parents went to the hospital. She and I made friendship bracelets with turtle beads on them. Then we got into a huuuge fight and we threw our bracelets into the mulch surrounding her backyard swing set. Her mom was super chill about it. She separated us and let me watch Nickelodeon while Jess cooled off in her room. Then my dad came and got me and I got to go meet my new baby brother!!!

My parents did not find out his sex before he was born, so it was a TOTAL surprise! I even made two different welcome home signs. I can’t say I was always thrilled to have another baby brother.. ahem… I used to dress Spenc up like a girl in his toddler days, but now I wouldn’t change him for the world.

I am so proud of the person you have become, Spencer James. I LOVE you so so so much. Happy 15th birthday!
